Abstract

 

Ashraf Alī Thānvī was a prominent scholar in the history of sub-continent. He was a great Sufi (spiritual guider), theologian and Jurist. He studied in Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband. When he completed his study in 1923, he chose three fields for his missionary work: sermons, teaching and compilation of books. He wrote over a thousand Islamic books in different aspects. In the sub-continent Shāh Walīullāh Al-Dehlawī and his sons’ contribution in the field of interpretation and sciences Holy Qurʼān of is of immense worth. They worked in these fields, so that the common people are made aware of the message of this Noble Book. Shah Abdul Qādir was the first scholar of this region who wrote translation of the Holy Qurʼān in Urdu Named Mouzuh Al-Qurʼān, Later on other commentators also adopted his method and followed his principles of translation, one of them is Ashraf Alī Thānvī, who wrote exegesis named Bayan Al-Qurʼān. In this tafsīr he focused on translation and exegesis of the Holy Qurʼān as well as Arabic sciences and especially rhetoric. In several verses he mentioned the forms of rhetoric and its beauties, from which the worth of this interpretation can be ascertained. An analytical study was direly needed to indicate these forms of rhetoric and its effect on the translation and interpretation of this tafsīr. Therefore, we choose one chapter of the Holy Qurʼān sūrah Luqmān, and studied it in details. The aim of this research study is to show the value of this interpretation, rhetorical forms and its beauties.
