Endeavors of Imam Ibn Abdul Barr Al-Qurtubi towards the science of Al-Qiraat, Methods of Recitation and his position on weighting between Qira’ats: (Comparative Study and Review)

Abstract

This research work is based on the scholarly work of one the great pillars and intellectual in the field of Hadith and its sciences, namely  Hafiz Ibn Abdul-Barr Al-Qurtubi, recognizing the significance of Alqira’at (Methods of recitation), being well versed on this pitch, scholarly writings, dictions presenting and its verification through hadith extraction and authentication with reference to these Qira’at used and applied in the interpretation of different Ahadith or the Prophetic Traditions and identifying the meaning to which they are intended.

The texts on the science of Qira’at or the methods of recitations were traced in his book (the preface to the meanings and chain of reporters in Al-Mua’tta), and merely mentioned some examples for the sake of representation, not comprehension, besides attributing each overwhelming method of qiar’at to the respective reciter among the ten leading reciters, subsequently highlighting his opinion in dominating one over the other method and on what ground had it considered to prevail.

I outlined his approach in the science of qira’at as well as mentioned criticisms and reproaches of those coming after him among the jurists with regard to the methodology of Ibn-e-Abdul Bar towards the science of qira’at.

To the best ofmy knowledge, his struggle in the field of qira’at have not been independently studied, and this research is simply an attempt to highlight his efforts in this regard.
